Photo Assignment 6: Mastering Depth of Field

SMU Football Senior Jordan Kerley Celebrates with his teammates after a volleyball game on Friday, February 24 in Dallas, Texas.

Camera Info: ISO 2500, 1/640, f2.8

This assignment was fun to try during football practice last week. During the spring semester, the SMU Football team rotates team building games into their Friday practices. Over the weekend they played volleyball with a medicine ball, which was fun to watch. Spring Ball practices start this week in preparation for the fall season.

I used the school’s camera for this assignment in order to create a deeper depth of field. My camera will go down to 2.8 sometimes, but I didn’t have anything going on this weekend to be able to set up a photoshoot or anything like that. Im also preparing for my sorority’s initiation this weekend so that’s mostly what I’ve been focusing on.

I really liked how this picture turned out. I tried taking some pictures by the volleyball net to get the player’s face in focus and make the net disappear, but only the border of the net really disappeared. The strings in the net actually disappeared and you could barely see them. I liked this photo because you can still see the outline of the rest of the team in the background and a bit of the indoor practice facility. The red out of focus blob in the front bottom part of the photo is actually my coworker, Case, as he’s filming Kerley’s reaction.

A group of 5 of us, including both of my bosses, photographed or filmed this volleyball game last week. SMU FB just posted a recap video on instagram from when the payers played dodgeball a few weeks ago. I photographed that as well and thought maybe some photos would work for this assignment, but I liked how this weekend’s photos turned out better.

During this volleyball game, one of the nets came crashing down when a medicine ball hit it. The nets were held together onto poles by weights and bungee cords. At least I can now say the football guys are good at football rather than volleyball! This season of Friday games was one of my favorites for sure.
