Photo Assignment 4: Rule of Thirds
February 13, 2023CAMERA INFO: 1/200, f/7.1, ISO 64
I always love shooting using the rule of thirds method. It allows me to be more creative and frame my pictures a little differently. I really can only use this method in staged or slow moving action shots because trying to keep up with a football game and trying to shoot the players using this method is a lot to think about at once.
The social media team from SMU LOOK planned this Valentine’s Day shoot, so I knew this would be a great opportunity to try getting creative with these photos for this assignment. I wanted the focus of this photo to be around the balloons, and not just Avery holding the balloons. The eye is drawn to them even though they are on the left side of the photograph.
SMU LOOK did a Valentine’s themed photoshoot last year as well and some of those photographs are still some of my all time favorites. I knew this year’s would be amazing as well. I tried using harsher light to create the shadows in the background, but I am unsure of if I like it or not. I usually shoot through an umbrella or reflect off of an umbrella that attaches to a light. I didn’t realize until halfway through the shoot. I think they next time I shoot in the studio I will use the umbrellas or the soft boxes again. The light was just a little too harsh but now I think I know how to fix it for next time. The shadows and hard light made it look a little more editorial though.
Avery is a Marketing Major with minors in English and Econ. She heard of this LOOK shoot through social media and decided to volunteer to be a model. Although she has never modeled in a shoot like this before, she models for her instagram feed. She was such a great model and person to work with!
I played around with the settings in lightroom again because the RAW photograph was over-exposed. I used the noise tool to reduce some of the grainy-ness, though there was not much grain.
